Welcome to our new Energy Talks miniseries, called Cybersecurity in the Power Grid in which we provide you with a 360-degree view of how power grids can best safeguard their infrastructures from cyber attacks.
Bridging the Gap between IT and OT
In Part 1 of this miniseries, OMICRON cybersecurity expert Benjamin Teudeloff talks about the increasing necessity for power providers to improve their cybersecurity practices. He gives insight into the evolving global landscape, the unique challenges faced by electrical utilities, and the importance of bridging the gap between Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT).
Lastly, Benjamin describes how OMICRON's comprehensive cybersecurity products and services are empowering power providers to safeguard their infrastructure in an ever-changing threat landscape.
Why Do OT Networks Need an IDS?
In Part 2 of this miniseries, we engage with OMICRON application engineers Ozan Dayanc and Thomas Wolf to explore the multifaceted world of power network security.
Discover the challenges faced by power providers and practical recommendations for enhancing OT network security. From the intricacies of daily work to customer interactions, Ozan and Thomas share insights into power network cybersecurity.
Solving Cybersecurity Problems in Electrical Power Networks
In Part 3 of our cybersecurity miniseries, we take a closer look at power grid security from the perspective of cybersecurity analysts. Join us as we dive into the common problems faced by customers and the dedicated efforts involved in finding practical solutions.
OMICRON cybersecurity analysts Christoph Rheinberger and Eric Heindl share their personal experiences, recommendations for IT and OT security officers, as well as valuable insights into how to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.
They also provide us with a deeper understanding of power grid cybersecurity and how to enhance protection in this vital industry.
Experiences and Challenges in
Developing Cybersecurity Products
In Part 4 of our cybersecurity miniseries, Anastasiya Shvetsova, OMICRON software quality assurance engineer, and Jaques Grobler, who is a full-stack developer at OMICRON, share their experiences, challenges, and innovations in developing our cross-cutting-edge cybersecurity products.
Learn about their personal journeys and what inspired them to become cybersecurity developers in the fields of quality assurance and full-stack development. Discover how they stay current with state-of-the-art practices to develop innovative solutions while ensuring the excellence and quality of the products.
From their daily challenges to their proudest successes and learnings, Anastasiya and Jaques offer valuable insights into their collaboration with other teams and the importance of their work in enhancing cybersecurity.
Building Trust in Digital Products Used in the Power Grid
In this episode, Andreas Klien, OMICRON's cybersecurity expert, and Sarah Fluchs, CTO at admeritia GmbH, discuss the security engineering of digital products in the power grid. They explore the question, "Can power grid operators trust manufacturers for reliable cybersecurity?"
The conversation includes insights into the pending EU Cyber Resilience Act, the significance of security certificates, the use of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), and the importance of open communication between operators and manufacturers.
Chances & Risks of OT in the Energy and Aviation Sectors
In this episode, Andreas Klien, OMICRON cybersecurity expert and Business Area Manager for Power Utility Communication, discusses the differences and similarities of using OT technology in the aviation and electrical power industry sectors with his guest, Ron Brash, a renowned vulnerability researcher in the aviation industry and Vice President of Technical Research and Integration at aDolus in British Columbia, Canada.
Andreas and Ron exchange stories about when things have gone wrong from their many years of experience in the aviation and electrical power industries. They highlight the contributing factors that have led to or nearly caused breaches in cybersecurity from both the OT and IT perspectives and exchange useful strategies in their related industry to help others reduce risk.
Cracking The Code: How to Uncover
Cyber Attacks on Your System
In this episode, we learn how an OMICRON team of cybersecurity experts approaches the analysis of incoming alarms and how even the smallest indicators can reveal hidden dangers that threaten the security and operation of an entire system.
This was put to the test by Norwegian utility Glitre Nett. They conducted an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) evaluation exercise at a live substation to compare solutions from several vendors, including OMICRON.
OMICRON cybersecurity experts Ozan Dayanc, Christoph Rheinberger, and Lukas Schneider join us in this episode to describe their involvement in the Glitre Nett exercise and discuss how they successfully completed it using OMICRON’s StationGuard intrusion detection system.
Minimizing cybersecurity
vulnerabilities at the hardware level
OMICRON hardware developer Marcel Ströhle describes how hardware cybersecurity is crucial to overall system security because hardware devices are another potential attack vector that can be easily neglected. Through examples of actual hardware attacks, he highlights how important proper cybersecurity is for your hardware applications and offers tips to ensure it.
Marcel shares his experiences securing hardware devices and describes how he and his team have developed reliable and robust hardware technology, such as the MBX2 mobile device.
